The oldest monument in Paris.Enthroned in the middle of the huge Place de la Concorde, this impressive obelisk shimmers, made of pink granite and topped with gold leaf decoration.Given as a gift by the Viceroy of Egypt Mohammed Ali and installed on the Place de la Concorde in 1836, the obelisk originally came from the Temple of Thebes in Luxor, Egypt. Covered with hieroglyphs recounting the victories of Ramses II, the base describes the techniques used to transport and install the monument which is 23 metres tall and weighs 230 tonnes.In 1937 the obelisk in the Place de la Concorde was classified a historical monument and today it remains the oldest monument in Paris.
